Absalom Bobo, PVT

Pension Application: R980 The following information is from the pension application of Absalom Bobo unless otherwise noted.

PatriotAbsalom Bobo was born about 1754 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was drafted in February or March of 1781 and first mustered at Blackstocks (View Map) in modern day Union County. Absalom served as a private in Captain George Roebuck‘s company of Colonel Benjamin Roebuck‘s battalion of the Spartan Militia.

After mustering at Blackstocks they marched to Granby on the south side of the Congaree River. From Granby, they marched to Orangeburg and encamped for a short time about one mile from the Orangeburg courthouse. There they were joined by two or three other regiments (possibly companies) of militia.

They received orders from General Nathanael Greene to march to Bacon’s Bridge on the Ashe River. Roebuck’s company, including Absalom Bobo, remained in Orangeburg to guard prisoners.

NOTE: Absalom mentions seeing Colonel William Farr while at Orangeburg.

Absalom remained in Orangeburg until his three month term expired and then returned home.
