Pension Application: R980 The following information is from the pension application of Absalom Bobo unless otherwise noted.

PatriotAbsalom Bobo was born about 1754 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was drafted in February or March of 1781 and first mustered at Blackstocks (View Map) in modern day Union County. Absalom served as a private in Captain George Roebuck‘s company of Colonel Benjamin Roebuck‘s battalion of the Spartan Militia.

Spartan Regiment Fought at Cowpens

The following article is based on the research of South Carolina State Representative Sam Manning and was published in the Spartanburg Herald-Journal on January 17, 1981, the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens. 

The Spartan Regiment, as reorganized in the summer of 1780 was a volunteer organization whose officers and men served without pay and without provisions. Their one desire was to throw off the yoke of British tyranny and to achieve freedom and independence. Continue reading
